Michael Lemke
Greeley, CO
(b. 1972, Wisconsin)
Michael Lemke’s pottery reflects his deep appreciation for texture, process, and connection. Inspired by marine life, he incorporates colors and patterns reminiscent of coral reefs, creating pieces that are both visually striking and engaging to the touch.
His process highlights the natural qualities of clay at every stage. He often leaves subtle throwing rings inside his pots while smoothing the exterior with a metal rib, creating contrast in texture. Thoughtfully crafting foot rims and manipulating clay while trimming allows for playful individuality in each piece. When the clay reaches a leather-hard state, he carves and decorates the surface, often using one of his daughter’s sewing tools to add distinctive lines.
Born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1972, Michael moved frequently due to his father’s job before settling in Colorado. He earned a BA in ceramics and sculpture from the University of Northern Colorado and an MFA in ceramics from Kansas State University. Michael has been active in the artist community in northern Colorado and runs the ceramics department at UNC in Greeley.
