OOAK Jewelry by Claire Sommers Buck

The Tonlé Earrings were inspired by the Tonlé Sap Lake in central Cambodia. For millinnea, the Tonle Sap lake and river system have been a source of abundance that has nourished a growing Cambodian population. During the Khmer Empire in 12th century BC, the Tonlé Sap, which was enriched by the freshwater flowing down from the Tibetan plateau, assured the Khmer people that they never had to worry about running out of food and water. It is because of this that the people of the ancient Khmer metropolis were free — in both mind and body — to pursue and develop artistic pursuits that included silk weaving and silversmithing, finessing a flavorsome local cuisine, as well as planning and building grand monuments like Angkor Wat. To this day, it supports approximately 3 million people and is the lifeblood of the region.

Using small brass beads & sterling silver wire, each earring is hand-fabricated in her studio in East Austin.

CLAIRE SOMMERS BUCK HANDCRAFTED JEWELRY

As a jewelry artist, I am intent on making pieces that are timeless in form, comfortable to wear and long lasting. Inspired by my love of the natural world as well as folk and ethnic craft designs, my work seeks to adorn in an authentic and genuine way. My creative process is often stirred by a simple idea or shape. What follows is the design and fabrication of the jewelry. Throughout this process, I use traditional jewelry fabrication and casting techniques to carefully create each piece from start to finish. The materials I use include brass, silver and gold, along with precious and semi-precious stones. Although I produce multiples within my jewelry line, each piece is slightly imperfect revealing their individuality and personal story. All of my work is proudly produced in my quaint studio in East Austin, TX.
