Artist Biography

Robin Scappaticci’s journey with clay began in the serene and picturesque Hudson Valley of New York State. Born and raised in the Mid-Hudson Valley, she fell in love with clay after taking her first ceramics class in high school. This passion led her to study Ceramics at the State University of New York in Potsdam, where she earned her degree. After graduation, she worked as a production potter in Massachusetts for a few years.

Life eventually took Robin away from pottery, but after 25 years, she rekindled her love for clay through a transformative summer class. Today, she creates pottery for the sheer joy it brings her. She revels in every aspect of the process—from the initial formation of the clay, choosing and applying delicate lace patterns, adding vibrant colors, to the anticipation of opening the kiln to reveal the final piece. Even the once-daunting task of glazing has become a part of the artistic journey she cherishes.

Artist Statement

After being away from clay for many years, I rediscovered my passion for ceramics and embraced a new direction that merges functionality with artistic expression. As a  functional potter, whether working on the wheel or hand-building, I constantly consider how each piece will be used, striving to create objects that bring joy.

I am drawn to a multitude of textural techniques. My work encompasses a variety of styles, from imprinting lace, leaves, and flowers onto the clay’s surface to exploring the intricacies of pictorial sgraffito, and even experimenting with bubble pots and raku. Recently, I have begun incorporating monoprinting with underglazes onto clay. This diversity of techniques allows me to continually evolve as an artist and express a range of artistic voices.

For Robin, making art is about finding and sharing joy. Robin finds profound satisfaction in seeing others appreciate her work. Her pieces are a testament to her enduring passion and dedication, embodying the joy and personal fulfillment that comes from creating art.
