Kei Glass by Kat Irvine
What makes you *click*? Everyone has something that’ll make them go “wow, this is it; this is what it’s all about”. While I still don’t fully understand what *clicks* for an accountant- maybe its the fact that it’s a real job *click* with good pay *click, click* but nothing had grabbed hold of me. I come from a very artistic family and have always had a pull towards the arts, but it wasn’t until the first time I grabbed a rod of glass and started melting that it just **clicked**. I still don’t fully know what I’m doing, but it is something I just have to do. That *click* has turned into my drive!
I have spent much of my adult life studying the art of others. I have a BA in Art History from CU Boulder and an MA in Art Museum and Gallery Studies from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in England. I have worked in galleries and museums in England and Colorado- studying, displaying, and falling in love with other’s art but believing that it wasn’t a career possibility for myself. Once I found glass and set up my at home studio, creating my own art became a reality for me.
I am mostly self taught in glass, learning through books; however, classes are definitely part of my future. I work in both fused glass and lampworked glass. Lampworking is done on a torch and is where my true passion lies. I love making jewelry but am hoping to move into more sculptural and functional art.
kei glass (kei is pronounced like KEY) is very simply my initials and my medium. I think it sounds cool… Mandarin maybe, and therefore chose that as my business name!!
