These prints are a culmination of several years of creating images based on a trip I took to Italy with educators and students. It was an opportunity of a lifetime to be able to see the work that I had learned about in art history courses with hundreds of slides and reproductions. To be able to see the work of Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Raphael and others first hand was an unforgettable experience…. To see the art that I have taught about for twenty five years was a long time coming. I kept a small journal daily during the trip and took a lot of photos which allow me to enjoy many memories as I created these prints.
My solar plate etchings were made with photos and memorabilia I collected on the trip. They were photocopied, assembled into a collage, and then again copied on to a transparency. This transparency was then placed on a light sensitive solar plate and exposed to the sun. The plate is rinsed, dried, then inked and wiped as other etching plates and printed on Rives BFK paper. I print with black oil based ink and then later hand color with watercolors and liquid inks.
I have been a printmaker at the Manitou Springs Art Center for many years as well as the art teacher at Mountainside Elementary School on Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs. I work in several print media processes and generally from inspiration from animals, landscapes, flora and fauna, and Colorado sport fishing. I am represented in local and regional galleries and have work in several personal and corporate collections both nationally and internationally.
